His Excellency John Dramani Mahama,
President of the Republic of Ghana
Jubilee House
Accra, Ghana

Subject:
A Respectful Appeal for Reconsideration of the Name for the Proposed University in Damongo:

Your Excellency, I, Alhaji Abdalla Mahama Adam, write to express my profound appreciation for your visionary leadership and your recent pronouncement establishing a university in Damongo.

The people of the Savannah Region have long yearned for such an institution, and we are deeply grateful for your commitment to advancing higher education, which will undoubtedly be the catalyst for development, skills training, and economic growth in our region.

This announcement has been met with great joy and anticipation.

It is in the spirit of this widespread enthusiasm that I humbly bring a matter of public sentiment to your attention.
While the establishment of the university is wholeheartedly welcomed, there are significant apprehensions among the populace regarding the proposed name, “Catholic University.”

The Savannah Region is a beautifully diverse tapestry of faiths and cultures.
Our communities are home to a significant Muslim population, as well as Christians of many different denominations and adherents of traditional religions, all living in harmony.

A university for the region, destined to be a public institution, should be a symbol of this unity and a welcoming place for every qualified student, regardless of their faith or background.
While we deeply respect the immense and invaluable contributions of the Catholic Church to education and healthcare across Ghana, naming the region’s primary public university after a single faith may inadvertently make segments of our diverse population feel excluded.

It is the desire of the people that the university’s name serves as a unifying beacon, reflecting the collective identity and aspirations of all citizens of the Savannah Region.
I, therefore, humbly and respectfully appeal to Your Excellency to reconsider the proposed name.
The silent believe a name that reflects the region’s geography, history, or a prominent, unifying local figure would be more representative and would ensure that every person in the Savannah Region feels a sense of ownership and pride in this landmark institution.

Names such as “Savannah University of………………….”
“University of ………,” or one honouring a revered local hero would be met with overwhelming public support and would truly cement the university’s status as an institution for all.
I reiterate my deepest gratitude for your decision to bring a university to our doorstep.

I trust in your wisdom and your demonstrated commitment to national unity, and I am hopeful for a favourable review of
this humble appeal.

Respectfully yours,

Abdalla Mahama Adam
