The National Sanitation Day exercise observed in Sawla, in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region, brought together several groups and departments, including the Sawlawura and his elders, as well as students, in fulfillment of the government’s initiative to observe the first Saturday of every month as National Sanitation Day. The initiative aims to combat diseases resulting from indiscriminate waste disposal.
Addressing participants after the exercise in Sawla on November 1, 2025, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District, Hon. Sinkina Saaka, disclosed that all temporary structures blocking water passages in the Sawla community will be demolished by the assembly next week.

He explained that these structures obstruct the natural flow of water, causing waste accumulation and exposing residents to sanitation related diseases.
According to the DCE, the Assembly will also introduce by-laws to regulate waste management and curb the improper handling of refuse in the community.
Hon. Sinkina expressed his appreciation to all decentralized departments and schools that participated in the exercise. However, he expressed disappointment at shop owners who closed their shops but failed to join in the cleanup.
He said;
“They have intentionally closed their shops and run away for us to clean only for them to come and open back their shops.”
He added that appropriate action would be taken against such individuals, stressing, “They are doing the business and making their money. Now we have asked you to come out and let’s clean the environment. You closed your shops and ran away. I want to assure you that we are going to put in measures that will force them to come out next time that we have such a wonderful exercise.”
Hon. Sinkina commended the participation of all political parties, noting that the exercise demonstrated unity beyond political affiliations, noting “That is the way we should live devoid of political affirmations. All should embrace peace and work towards making the community a safe environment for all,” he said.
He further cautioned that an unclean environment could lead to disease outbreaks, emphasizing the importance of maintaining cleanliness to stay healthy.
The DCE also expressed excitement about the communal spirit displayed during the exercise, saying it fostered peace, socialization, and cooperation among participants.
The Chief of Sawla, Sawlawura Abdulai Nungbaso, praised the exercise, saying cleanliness is vital in every community.
He said;
“When you make your environment clean, it prevents a lot of sicknesses that might have arisen.”
He added that the cleanup exercise is a major support to Sawla and its surrounding communities in addressing waste challenges.
He urged the youth to actively participate whenever such announcements are made, cautioning against idleness during community cleanups.
He also warned shop owners who sweep rubbish into gutters in front of their shops to desist from the practice, stressing that anyone caught would face appropriate punishment.
