The overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bikunuto Jewu Soale I, has released 110 acres of land to the Government of Ghana for the construction of the Savannah Regional Hospital at Damongo.
The gesture marks a significant step toward advancing healthcare delivery and addressing longstanding infrastructural deficits in the Savannah Region.A high-powered government delegation led by the Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandor, visited the Jakpa Palace on Friday, 21st November 2025, to formally communicate the government’s renewed commitment to the project.
The minister explained that President John Dramani Mahama’s 2026 Budget and Economic Policy Statement includes major investments in the health sector, with GH₵600 million allocated for the construction of three new regional hospitals — one of which will serve the Savannah Region.
After the palace engagement, the Damongowura guided the minister and his team to inspect the designated project site. Hon. Akandor disclosed that the upcoming hospital will be supported by residential accommodations for doctors and other medical professionals, a measure aimed at addressing the housing challenges that often hinder the efficient operation of major health facilities.
He added that construction is expected to begin early next year.Speaking on behalf of the Yagbonwura, the Paramount Chief of the Mankpan Traditional Area, Mankpanwura Borenyi Achode, reaffirmed the kingdom’s readiness to make land available for development.
He emphasized that the Gonja Kingdom possesses abundant land resources and that the Yagbonwura remains committed to supporting all initiatives that bring growth and transformation to the region.“The Yagbonwura is always ready to partner with the government for development. His doors are open, and he is ever prepared to offer the necessary support to ensure the progress of his kingdom,” the Mankpanwura assured.
As a gesture of honor and appreciation, the Yagbonwura later enskinned the Minister for Health as the Alenfiawura of the Gonja Kingdom for his dedication to advancing healthcare infrastructure and his role in championing the Savannah Regional Hospital project.Once completed, the Savannah Regional Hospital is expected to significantly enhance healthcare capacity, ease congestion in existing facilities, and improve emergency and specialized medical services across the region.
