A newborn baby has been rescued after being abandoned in an uncompleted building at the Kawuribi area of Sawla in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, December 12, 2025.Confirming the development, the Assemblyman for the Kawuribi Electoral Area and Presiding Member of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Assembly, Hon. Alhaji Abdulai Mohammed, said a young man rushed to his residence to report hearing a baby crying in an uncompleted structure in the area.
He explained that upon receiving the information, he immediately reported the matter to the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Police Command and also informed the Palace of the Sawlawura.
According to Hon. Abdulai Mohammed, a landlord living close to the uncompleted building had earlier heard the persistent cries of a baby and decided to investigate. Upon arrival, the landlord found the newborn lying on bare sand, uncovered and exposed to the cold weather.
The baby was promptly rescued and rushed to the Sawla District Hospital for medical attention. The Assemblyman said the child is responding well to treatment and is currently in a stable condition.
He added that the District Social Welfare Officer has since intervened and is expected to assume full responsibility for the baby after medical professionals complete the necessary assessments and care.
Hon. Abdulai Mohammed has appealed to residents to assist the police with information that could help identify the person responsible for abandoning the child.“If you know anyone who was pregnant and is no longer pregnant without a baby, kindly report the person to the police to aid investigations,” he urged.
Meanwhile, the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Police Command has launched investigations to trace and arrest those behind what authorities have described as a dangerous and inhumane act.
