President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited, Adam Mutawakilu, for his dedication and leadership in advancing water access across the country, particularly in the Savannah Region.
Speaking at the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Gonjaland Youth Association in Buipe on Sunday, April 5, 2026, President Mahama underscored the critical importance of potable water as a fundamental human right.
“With regard to access to safe water, we know it is a right and not a privilege,” the President stated, drawing applause from the gathering.

He praised the managing director of the Ghana Water Company Hon. Adam Mutawakilu for his proactive efforts and commitment to improving water infrastructure, noting that his appointment was yielding tangible results.
“I want to thank my younger brother for the very good work he has done. We did not send him to Ghana Water Company for nothing. He has done all the legwork,” President Mahama remarked.
In a major announcement, the President revealed that the long-anticipated Damongo Water Supply Project had reached a significant milestone.
“I am happy to announce to you that just last week, the Minister of Finance signed the commitment letter for the Damongo Water Supply System,” he disclosed.

The Damongo Water Supply Project is expected to significantly improve access to clean and reliable water for residents of Damongo and surrounding communities, many of whom have struggled with water shortages and dependence on unsafe sources for years.
When completed, the project will enhance public health outcomes, reduce the burden on women and children who often travel long distances in search of water, and support economic activities that depend on a stable water supply.
The initiative forms part of a broader government strategy to expand water infrastructure across underserved regions, ensuring equitable distribution of essential services and promoting inclusive development.
President Mahama’s announcement was met with optimism and renewed hope among residents, as the project is expected to mark a turning point in addressing water challenges in the Savannah Region.
