
The Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, together with the Board Chairman of the Company, has paid a working visit to the Yapei River in the Savannah Region as part of ongoing assessments for theTamale–Yendi–Damongo Water Supply Project.
The high-level visit formed part of a broader technical evaluation aimed at determining the river’s capacity and suitability to serve as the primary raw water source for the multi-million-cedi project. The initiative, when completed, is expected to significantly boost potable water supply to the fast-growing urban centres of Tamale, Yendi, Damongo, and surrounding communities.
During the inspection tour, the GWCL leadership interacted with engineers, hydrologists, and local stakeholders to better understand the river’s flow patterns, sustainability prospects, and environmental considerations.
The team also assessed potential challenges that could affect the intake point and long-term viability of the project.Mr. Mutawakilu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering reliable and safe drinking water to residents of the Northern and Savannah Regions, adding that the Yapei River remains a promising option for meeting the increasing water demand driven by population growth and urban expansion.
The Board Chairman, for his part, commended the technical team for their continuous work on the project and emphasized the importance of thorough feasibility studies to ensure quality service delivery and value for money.The Tamale–Yendi–Damongo Water Project, one of the largest water supply interventions in northern Ghana, is expected to improve public health, support economic activities, and reduce the perennial water shortages experienced in the beneficiary communities.
