The Savannah Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Iddrisu Sulemana, affectionately known as “Prof. Kalamonia”, has made a passionate appeal to journalists across Ghana and most especially in the Savannah Region, to utilize their medium to represent diverse views and balance public perspectives.
Prof. Kalamonia made this call when he delivered his concluding remarks at the 2025 annual Maulid conference of Sheikh Mustapha in Damongo on December 20th, 2025.
He emphasized the crucial role journalists play in shaping public opinion and influencing societal discourse.
According to Prof. Kalamonia, journalists have a responsibility to be fair, accurate, and unbiased in their reporting.
He said a journalist in Savannah Region accused him of taking a contract to rehabilitate the Sawla-Damongo-Fufulso road and never did it and he wants to urge the general public to treat it with the contempt it deserves.
He stressed that the media has the power to make or break individuals, communities, and institutions, and therefore, must be used wisely.
The Regional Chairman urged journalists to be mindful of the impact their words and actions can have on others.
He noted that sensationalism and misinformation can have far-reaching and devastating consequences, including damaging reputations and escalating tensions.
Prof. Kalamonia emphasized that journalists must strive to be responsible and not allow themselves to be used as a vehicle to dent the reputations of people.
He stressed that this was essential for maintaining the integrity of the profession and ensuring that the media remains a force for good in society.
He also pointed out that many journalists in Ghana or anywhere in the world may eventually become politicians or leaders, and therefore, using their platforms to harm the reputation of leaders of today is irresponsible.
The NPP Regional Chairman reminded journalists that their role is to inform, educate, and entertain, not to maliciously attack or destroy individuals who have strived to be where they are today.
He urged them to maintain high standards of professionalism and ethics in their work.
The Maulid conference provided a platform for Prof. Kalamonia to share his thoughts on the importance of responsible journalism and the need for journalists to uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
The event was well-received by attendees, who pledged to promote responsible journalism and uphold the values of fairness, accuracy, and balance in their reporting.
