The Gbiniyiri and Dagbigu communities in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region have undergone traditional cleansing rites aimed at restoring peace and unity after violent clashes in August 2025.

The ceremony, held on January 23, 2026, sought to appease the gods of the land and reconcile the affected communities after months of tension and hardship. The earlier conflict had displaced families, disrupted access to healthcare and education, and destroyed farm produce, deepening economic difficulties in the area.

Speaking to Bole-based Nkilgi FM, the Chief Priest of the Tuna area, Heuhing Mwiiri Kipo, expressed gratitude to the gods and ancestors for accepting the sacrifices and granting peace to the communities. He also invoked a curse on anyone who might take up arms on the land again, reinforcing a renewed collective commitment to harmony.

Rev. Father Lazarus Annyereh, a member of the Gbiniyiri Mediation Committee and Savannah Regional Chairman of the Peace Council, attended the ceremony on behalf of the committee. He described the purification as a significant step toward achieving sustainable peace in Gbiniyiri and surrounding communities, noting that it had helped resolve some of the mediation team’s outstanding challenges.

Traditional leaders, security personnel, and residents were present at the event, underscoring a shared determination to promote peaceful coexistence and rebuild trust within the area.
