The Member of Parliament (MP) for Bole-Bamboi and Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Alhaji Yussif sulemana has been commended for his swift intervention and commitment to improving healthcare delivery at the district hospital.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement of the 2025 performance review on February 18, 2026, the hospital management highlighted the critical role the MP has played in addressing key operational challenges, including water supply and approval for specialized medical procedures.
According to the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Dr. Jonathan Wadeyir Abesig the facility has struggled with significant staff shortages despite handling a high volume of cases. The hospital recorded 1,510 deliveries within the period under review, yet operates with fewer than 20 midwives. Of these, 2 are stationed at antenatal unit, 12 at the maternity unit, and 4 are assigned to the gynaecology ward, while others are distributed across units such at the emergency department and general wards.
Management noted that the limited number of midwives are overstretched, often working beyond their scheduled hours to ensure patients receive care.
“Some of the charges even stayed back after their normal duties. They overstayed,” he said, commending staff for their sacrifice and dedication.
The hospital also raised concerns about blood donation challenges. Management indicated that blood deficits are typically covered either through family replacement donors or commercial donors. However, authorities emphasized that commercial donors are not permitted to charge patients directly. An instance was cited where a donor allegedly demanded ghc1,800 for a unit of blood, a practice the hospital described as unacceptable.
To address these challenges, the hospital is advocating for independent verification systems to ensure transparency and reduce the burden on poor patients who require blood transfusions. Management further called for the implementation of rural health worker incentives to improve conditions of service and help retain staff.
The hospital expressed gratitude to key stakeholders, including traditional leaders, elders, assembly members, and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), noting that approximately 88 percent of services provided by the facility are covered under the National Health Insurance.
Particular appreciation was extended to the MP for his direct interventions. Management revealed that when the hospital faced severe water shortages, the MP facilitated the provision of a mechanized borehole to restore reliable water supply.
Additionally, although the facility was not officially accredited to conduct orthopedic surgeries, the MP played a pivotal role in securing approval from the National Health Insurance Authority. Hospital authorities disclosed that after petitioning for permission to carry out orthopedic operations, the MP personally delivered the letter to the appropriate office, resulting in same-day approval.
Hospital leadership described the MP’s actions as a demonstration of serious commitment to healthcare development in the constituency and expressed hope for continued collaboration to improve service delivery and ease the burden on patients.
