Severe flooding has led to the collapse of the Kunfusi Dam near Kunfusi in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region, following about 15 hours of continuous rainfall on 23rd to 24th September, 2026.
The situation has reportedly rendered major roads in the area impassable, leaving communities cut off from the rest of the region and raising concerns about the movement of people, food, and essential supplies.
Speaking to Bole-based Nkilgi FM, the Chief of Kunfusi, Kunfusiwura Saaka Awusi, confirmed the situation and expressed concern over the impact of the flooding on residents.
According to the Chief, the condition of the roads has become so severe that vehicles can no longer access the community.
“Our road has ceased to be motorable, leaving about 15,000 people cut off from the rest of the Savannah Region,” the Chief said.
Several sections of the Tuna to Kalba road have also been affected by the flooding, further disrupting transportation and connectivity between communities.
The recurring flooding has raised concerns among residents, particularly because Kunfusi and surrounding communities are considered an important food-producing area within the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District.
Kunfusiwura Saaka Awusi has therefore appealed to duty bearers and relevant authorities to urgently intervene and work together to find a lasting solution to the perennial flooding and road challenges.
He stressed the need for long-term measures to prevent the annual disruption, particularly given the area’s contribution to food production in the district.
Residents are now calling for urgent assistance to restore access to the affected communities and ensure that people can move safely while efforts are made to address the underlying causes of the recurring flooding.
