The Ghana Police Service has arrested 36 suspects in connection with the alleged lynching of a police officer at Gindabour in the Sawla District of the Savannah Region.
The deceased officer, identified as General Constable Redeemer Owusu, was attacked by a mob on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, following an incident involving a motorbike rider on the Gindabour-Kenkyen community road.
According to a press release issued by the Savannah Regional Police Headquarters in Damongo on 17th September, 2026, preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased officer and his colleagues were on highway patrol duties when they spotted a motorbike rider who allegedly diverted into the bush upon seeing the police vehicle.
The officers became suspicious and followed up from another direction, where they found the rider unconscious on a bush road.
The police team picked up the man and began conveying him to a hospital for medical attention. However, he reportedly died while being transported to the facility.
Following news of the rider’s death, a mob from the community allegedly attacked the police officers, resulting in the death of General Constable Redeemer Owusu.
Other officers sustained varying degrees of injuries during the attack, while the police vehicle was also damaged.
The bodies of both the deceased police officer and the motorbike rider have since been conveyed to the Damongo Morgue for preservation and autopsy.
In response to the incident, the Inspector-General of Police has deployed investigators and intelligence officers to assist with investigations and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Reinforcement teams from Damongo, Bole, Sawla, Tuna and Kalba, together with the Regional Intelligence Team, have also been deployed to the area to strengthen security and maintain law and order.
The 36 suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations and are expected to be put before court.
The Savannah Regional Police Command has condemned the attack on its officers and said it will ensure that persons found culpable face the full rigours of the law.
