The Savannah Regional Minister, Salisu Be-Awuribe, has signed contracts for the construction of modern 24-hour economy markets across all seven Municipal and District Assemblies in the region, marking a major step toward economic transformation. The contract signing ceremony, held on Thursday, April 2, 2026, covers key beneficiary areas including Damongo in the West Gonja Municipality, Bole, Buipe, Salaga, Kpalbe, Daboya and Sawla.
The event brought together Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), contractors, traditional authorities, and key stakeholders from across the Savannah Region.Addressing participants, Hon. Be-Awuribe described the initiative as a historic milestone in the region’s development agenda.

He noted that the markets also referred to as 24-hour economy markets are designed to enhance trade and support continuous commercial activity.According to the Minister, the projects have been grouped into four categories Categories 1 through 4 based on strategic importance and economic viability.
The highest category has been assigned to Damongo, Bole and Buipe. He explained that Damongo’s status as the regional capital positions it for top-tier infrastructure, while Bole’s prominence as a commercial hub with cross-border trading links, particularly with Côte d’Ivoire, justifies its classification. Buipe was also highlighted for its vibrant and long-established market system, which operates from Saturday through Tuesday, making it one of the busiest trading centers in northern Ghana.

The remaining districts—Salaga, Kpalbe, Daboya and Sawla have been allocated categories tailored to their respective economic strengths to ensure balanced regional development. The Minister urged contractors to adhere strictly to timelines and maintain high construction standards, warning that contracts would be terminated if expectations are not met. He, however, assured them of prompt payment upon certification of completed works.

Hon. Be-Awuribe further emphasized that the Savannah Region, being the home region of the President, must set a high standard in project execution, adding that the necessary resources have been made available to ensure success. On compensation, he clarified that no financial payments would be made for structures affected by the projects. However, he indicated that traditional authorities have committed to providing alternative land to support affected individuals.
He also revealed that the proposed Mankarigu market project remains open for bidding, as no contractor has yet submitted a proposal. The 24-hour market initiative is expected to boost trade, create employment opportunities, and significantly stimulate economic growth across the Savannah Region.
