More than 60 newly placed Senior High School (SHS) students from financially struggling families across the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba (STK) Constituency in the Savannah Region have received educational support from an aspiring National Democratic (NDC) Chairman for the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Constituency Constituency Mr Mahama Zakariah.
The intervention is providing relief to families battling economic hardship, many of whom face serious difficulties raising money for the basic requirements needed to send their children to SHS.
The beneficiaries were selected from communities spread across the vast constituency, including Gbenyeri, Sanyeri, Kalba Kunfugsi, Nahari, Tuna, Soma, Jang, Kpongri, Nyangekura, Sogoyeri, Jindabo and Goyeri.
Others came from Sawla township, Yarikoi, Gonsi, Nyanyama, Gurunyeri, Jelinkon, Yepala, Domangbori and Kanchen.
For families already struggling to meet daily household needs, the transition from basic school to SHS can become another major financial burden. School uniforms, learning materials and other requirements often come at a time when parents are already under pressure to provide food and other necessities.
Mr Zakariah said his support was intended to ease some of the burden on families and give the students a better opportunity to begin their secondary education.
“I wish I could attend to all our communities across the district, but the constituency is so large that my resources could not reach all,” he said.
He acknowledged that many communities remain in need of support but said he would continue to assist students within his means.
Mr Zakariah pledged to support more BECE graduates next year, telling the beneficiaries that they were “the lucky ones for this year.”
He also urged the students not to take the opportunity for granted, but to work hard and remain committed to their education.
“I want you to take your studies seriously so that you can become better people tomorrow,” he told them.
The intervention comes amid broader concerns about the economic difficulties confronting families in rural parts of the STK Constituency, where limited household incomes can make educational progression difficult for some children.
For the beneficiaries and their families, the assistance offers immediate relief at a critical stage of their educational journey, while underscoring the financial pressures that continue to confront households trying to keep their children in school.
