The Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has directed the reinstatement of Muhiba Iddrisu, popularly known as Queen Hiba, and other aspirants who were previously disqualified from contesting in the party’s impending Savannah Regional executive elections.
The decision follows deliberations on issues arising from the vetting of aspirants in the Savannah Region, with the committee reaching a consensus on a number of directives to guide the Elections Directorate in resolving the concerns.
According to the decisions, the Elections Directorate is expected to conduct a transparent balloting exercise for all three qualified candidates contesting for the position of Deputy Regional Organiser to ensure fairness in the process.
The committee also directed that all previously disqualified Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) executives be qualified to contest.
The directive is to apply uniformly across the country, in line with efforts to promote inclusivity and strengthen grassroots participation in the party’s internal electoral processes.
On the requirement for aspirants to have previously served as branch or constituency executives, the NDC FEC reportedly determined that the regulation had been wrongly applied in the Savannah Regional elections.
The committee clarified that the requirement applies to national-level contests and not regional elections.
Consequently, aspirants for the positions of Regional Treasurer and Regional Communications Officer who were affected by the interpretation of the regulation are to be qualified to contest.
The decision paves the way for Queen Hiba and other affected aspirants to participate in the Savannah Regional NDC executive elections, following the concerns raised over their disqualification during the vetting process.
The latest development is expected to influence the dynamics of the upcoming regional elections as the party works towards ensuring fairness and equal opportunities for qualified aspirants.
The Elections Directorate is expected to implement the directives of the Functional Executive Committee accordingly.
