The Ghana Police Service has successfully foiled an attempted robbery in Buipe in the Savannah Region, leading to the arrest of two suspects and the death of two others during a follow-up operation.

According to a press release issued by the Regional Police Headquarters in Damongo on April 30, 2026, the operation was the result of sustained intelligence-led efforts by the police. The incident traces back to April 26, 2026, when a police patrol team on duty along the Yapei–Tamale road encountered three armed men who opened fire on an armored police vehicle.

The officers returned fire, forcing the suspects to flee. A locally manufactured firearm and an empty cartridge were later retrieved from the scene. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of two suspects, Osman Abdulai, also known as “Landan ” and Umar Seidu in Tamale on April 27.

During interrogation, the suspects admitted they had planned to carry out a robbery at Yapei but abandoned the plan after being involved in a motor accident. They also confessed to participating in the earlier attack on the police patrol team and identified their accomplices as Babuga, Kilor and Malami.

The suspects later guided police to a location along the Yapei–Salaga road where a single-barrel shotgun with a shortened barrel and five rounds of ammunition were retrieved. On April 29, acting on further intelligence from Osman Abdulai, the police launched a follow-up operation in Buipe to apprehend the remaining gang members at a guest house where two suspects were located.

During the confrontation, one of them, identified as Babuga, attacked officers with a machete and was shot. Both suspects sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to the Buipe District Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival. Their bodies have since been deposited at St. Ann’s Hospital in Damongo for preservation and autopsy.

Police say efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the remaining members of the robbery network.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its continued commitment to combating crime and maintaining security. It also urged individuals with relevant information to report to the nearest police station or call the toll-free number 18555.
