The long-awaited Damongo Water Project has taken another significant step towards implementation following a stakeholder engagement organised by the Ghana Water Limited (GWCL) to deepen public understanding and build support for the transformational initiative.
The institutional stakeholders’ workshop, held on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at the Kasha Restaurant Conference Hall in Damongo, formed part of the project’s mandatory stakeholder consultation process and brought together government officials, traditional authorities, security agencies, religious leaders, women’s groups, Assembly Members, and other key stakeholders.
Addressing participants, the Northern Regional Chief Manager of Ghana Water Limited, Mr. Rashid Braimah Soale, described the Damongo Water Project as a transformative intervention that will significantly improve access to safe and reliable drinking water across Damongo and surrounding communities.
He explained that the project is designed to produce approximately 135 cubic metres (about 30 million gallons) of treated water daily, a capacity expected to meet the growing water needs of communities along the project’s transmission corridor while supporting future population growth and socio-economic development.
According to Mr. Soale, the project goes beyond the construction of water infrastructure and represents a major investment in public health, economic growth, and improved living standards.
He acknowledged that large-scale infrastructure projects often come with challenges, including land acquisition, compensation, and temporary disruptions, and therefore appealed to traditional leaders, Assembly Members, and community stakeholders to work closely with Ghana Water Limited to ensure the smooth execution of the project.
As part of the engagement, officials presented the project’s Resettlement Action Plan (RAP), outlining the processes for land acquisition, eligibility criteria, and compensation arrangements for persons who may be affected by the construction works.
The interactive workshop concluded with an extensive question-and-answer session, during which participants sought clarification on various aspects of the project and expressed optimism about the positive impact the Damongo Water Project is expected to have on water supply, public health, and development within the West Gonja Municipality.
The Municipal Chief Executive for West Gonja, Hon. Yakubu Yussif Castro, joined government officials and other stakeholders at the engagement, reaffirming the importance of collaboration in ensuring the successful implementation of one of the municipality’s most anticipated infrastructure projects.
