Former Damongo MP and Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Hon. Adam Mutawakilu Garlus, has donated 15 industrial sewing machines to members of the Lordina Ladies in the Damongo Constituency as part of efforts to strengthen their livelihoods and support women-led businesses.
The machines were presented at Hon. Mutawakilu’s residence in Damongo, where members of the group expressed excitement and appreciation for the gesture.
Addressing the beneficiaries, Hon. Mutawakilu said the donation was in recognition of the group’s years of loyalty and support, particularly during difficult periods when the NDC was in opposition and when he lost his parliamentary bid in the 2020 elections.
He recalled that his relationship with the group dates back to 2010, when he served as District Chief Executive for the then West Gonja District.
According to him, the Lordina Ladies remained steadfast despite political setbacks and pressures, including the NDC’s defeat in the 2016 general elections and his own defeat in the 2020 parliamentary election.
“You never left me, even during the challenging times. You stood by me.
We were ridiculed and mocked. Others betrayed us along the way and were moved by material things. However, your commitment to me, John Dramani Mahama, Lordina Mahama and the NDC is yielding results today, and you will enjoy the fruits of your loyalty,” he said.
Hon. Mutawakilu said although he had twice failed in his attempt to become the Member of Parliament for Damongo, he remained grateful for the opportunity given to him by President John Dramani Mahama, who appointed him Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited.
He said the donation formed part of a broader empowerment initiative aimed at supporting members of the group to become economically independent.
He disclosed that the 15 sewing machines constituted only the first consignment, with a second batch expected to benefit other members.
The subsequent support, he said, would include equipment for hairdressing, weaving and dressmaking, as well as financial assistance for members seeking to establish or expand their businesses.
He also revealed that some members of the group had already benefited from employment opportunities he facilitated at Ghana Water Limited, the Ghana Education Service, the security services and other institutions.
Hon. Mutawakilu assured the group that the empowerment programme would not be limited to formally educated members, but would extend to individuals with vocational skills and those engaged in other legitimate economic activities.
The leadership and beneficiaries of the Lordina Ladies expressed gratitude to Hon. Mutawakilu, saying they had remained loyal to him because they believed their sacrifices would eventually yield positive results.
They prayed for him and pledged their continued support for Hon. Mutawakilu, President John Dramani Mahama, First Lady Lordina Mahama and the NDC.
Meanwhile, Hon. Mutawakilu provided an update on the Damongo Water Project, disclosing that arrangements were underway for compensation to be paid to persons affected by the project.
He said once the compensation process was completed, the contractor would move to the project site to commence work.
The development is expected to pave the way for the next phase of the long-awaited water project, which is aimed at improving water supply in Damongo and surrounding communities.
