The King and Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, has supported 105 brilliant but needy tertiary students from across Gonjaland with GH¢250,000 to help them pursue their academic programmes.
The presentation took place at the Jakpa Palace on 18th September, 2026, and was part of activities under the Bii-Kunuto Educational Fund, an initiative established to help young people from the Gonja Kingdom overcome financial barriers that could prevent them from accessing or completing tertiary education.
The latest intervention is regarded as another significant step in the Fund’s efforts to promote education and support promising young people whose academic aspirations may otherwise be threatened by financial difficulties.
Addressing the beneficiaries, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I encouraged them to take their studies seriously and make good use of the opportunity provided to them.
The Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom urged the students to remain focused on their education, demonstrate discipline and work hard to achieve their academic and professional goals.
He further advised the beneficiaries to remember their communities and contribute to their development when they attain success.
According to the Yagbonwura, the support should not be viewed merely as financial assistance, but as an investment in the future of the Gonja Kingdom.
He therefore encouraged the beneficiaries to see themselves as future leaders and professionals with a responsibility to contribute positively to society.
To ensure that the beneficiaries genuinely met the criteria for the intervention, a committee chaired by Tulodompe Wura Abdullah Monor was constituted to oversee the selection process.
The committee was tasked with identifying students who were academically promising but faced financial challenges in pursuing their tertiary education.
According to information shared at the event, the committee undertook the selection process with due diligence and ensured that the beneficiaries were selected based on established criteria.
The process was conducted without favouritism, with emphasis placed on the academic needs and financial circumstances of applicants.
The committee’s role was therefore critical in ensuring that the GH¢250,000 support reached students who needed the assistance most.
Some chiefs and Queen Mothers of the Gonja Kingdom who attended the presentation also added their voices to the advice given to the beneficiaries.
They encouraged the students to remain committed to their education and to appreciate the sacrifice and investment being made in their future.
The traditional leaders urged the beneficiaries to conduct themselves responsibly, respect their parents, guardians, lecturers and other members of society, and remain focused on their academic pursuits.
They also reminded the students that the support they had received came with a responsibility to work hard and eventually contribute to the development of their communities.
Speaking on behalf of the Bii-Kunuto Educational Fund, the Fund’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) explained that the current initiative represents the fourth major intervention undertaken by the Fund since its establishment in 2023.
According to the PRO, the Fund’s interventions have focused on addressing different educational needs and creating opportunities for young people.
The first major intervention took place in 2023, when the Fund supported 60 tertiary students with educational assistance.
The second intervention involved supporting three students who are currently pursuing their studies in China, providing them with assistance to enable them to continue their academic journeys outside the country.
The third major initiative focused on improving educational support services at the secondary-school level. Under that intervention, the Fund supported Damongo Senior High School with a Guidance and Counselling Centre, aimed at providing students with access to guidance and counselling services.
The latest initiative, which has seen 105 tertiary students receive GH¢250,000, therefore represents another major milestone in the Fund’s activities since its establishment.
The Bii-Kunuto Educational Fund’s interventions demonstrate a continuing focus on education as a tool for empowering young people and contributing to the long-term development of Gonjaland.
For many students, financial challenges can create difficulties in paying fees, purchasing learning materials and meeting other educational expenses. The support provided through the Fund is intended to ease some of these challenges and enable beneficiaries to concentrate on their studies.
