The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has expressed deep disappointment over the circumstances surrounding the death of a police officer who was allegedly lynched by residents in the Gindabour community.
During a visit to the community where the incident occurred, the IGP addressed police officers stationed in the area and voiced his concerns about the apparent lack of intervention from members of the community while the officer was being attacked.
According to the IGP, in other communities, residents would have come to the aid of a police officer and attempted to stop such an attack. However, he said the situation in Gindabour was different, raising questions about why nobody stepped in to prevent the officer from being lynched.
The IGP described the development as worrying and said the death of the officer was a painful reminder of the dangers police officers can face while performing their duties.
He also announced that the deceased officer would be promoted posthumously to the next rank in recognition of his service.
Addressing the other officers at the station, the IGP encouraged them to remain committed to their duties despite the difficult circumstances.
He assured them that officers who distinguish themselves through hard work and dedication would also have opportunities for promotion.
The visit formed part of the IGP’s engagement with officers following the incident as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death and the arrests made in connection with the case.
